i was reading some demographic issues today. i didnt noe tat the expected world population is gonna be over 9billion by 2050. and tats the projection after much reduction in consideration of falling fertility rates in developing countries.
9 billion.
tats like almost twice of what we were having just a few years ago. the earth's population seems to be following a geometric progression. after years of human existance, we hit the 1billion mark in the 1850s, 2 billion in 1950s, 4 billion in 2000, and now projecting 9 billion in 2050. hmmm.
its saturation to the max.
i have little or even no confidence of what the future can promise.
besides, with the increasing fast pace life we as singaporeans lead today, the demand for faster and more convenient services are on the rise. like how ntuc, primemart, shop and save and other supermarts are slowing eating away the morning wet market's share of the consumers. like how convenience stores like 7-11 are putting mama-shops into obsoletion. these newly(relative to the markets/mama shops which have come a long way from existence) retail shops project a clean, professional, and fair(price) image, which is appealing to the younger people, over the dusty mamashops which could just be selling overdue products. hmmm. just imagine your life, and even your kids's life, growing up without all these, which has all along been part of the Singaporean Culture. wouldnt you feel tat something is missing from your life? how you used to go check out the mamashops for sweets, and tagged along to ur mum to wet markets and laugh at the aunties bargaining 10cents off. this is the singaporean life! maybe STB should look into these smaller integral parts of the singaporean life. even china town is becoming so commercialised that it has lost its formal lustre. its nice and clean now, but the feeling just isnt right. hmmm...
the world should not provide for more people, but provide more for people. thomas malthus predicted in the 18th century that the human race would be sent into universal famine and misery, when population growth outstrips the growth in food supply. would this come true? though this theory has already been rejected once. but i guess there are still a chance that it would happen.
my retrospect;
